John 4:23 ““It’s who you are and the way you live that count before God. Your worship must engage your spirit in the pursuit of truth. That’s the kind of people the Father is out looking for: those who are simply and honestly themselves before him in their worship.” (MSG, emphasis added)
We must be big on worship as people of God. Worship must be a huge part of your identity as a disciple of Christ Jesus. The truth is that the most important thing that we do is worship. I believe that the most important part of any worship experience [service] is worship. Every part of service is important of course; the Word is important and indispensable, and testimonies are powerful just to mention a few. However, the most important part of any service is worship and God wants true worship. God desires true worship; He wants true worship from us.
So, what is true worship and what is it to offer worship to God that is acceptable? How can we offer worship to God that is acceptable? Jesus made it clear in John 4:21-24 “Jesus replied, “Believe me, dear woman, the time is coming when it will no longer matter whether you worship the Father on this mountain or in Jerusalem. You Samaritans know very little about the one you worship, while we Jews know all about him, for salvation comes through the Jews. But the time is coming—indeed it’s here now—when true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and in truth. The Father is looking for those who will worship him that way. For God is Spirit, so those who worship him must worship in spirit and in truth.” (emphasis added).
True worshippers must worship God in spirit and in truth and that is what true worship is. True worship is worshipping God in spirit and in truth. Interestingly, the Word of God says the Father is looking for true worshippers, for those who will worship Him in spirit and in truth. I find that interesting because if God is looking for someone, He will find the person. If God is looking for you, He will find you. Yet there are people that are keeping vigils, looking for God. There are people that are fasting forty days and forty nights looking for God. But there are people that God is looking for. Where do you want to be, those looking for God or those that God is looking for? God is saying to us that true worship puts us in a place where He, the Father is looking [searching] for us. The word ‘looking’ in John 4:23 is an action word, a verb.
Being a true worshipper puts you in a place where God is looking for you. You have to make up your mind to be a true worshipper. You have to make up your mind that if God, who can be in any place at any time, were to be in just one place on the face of the earth, that place will be your house. How is this even possible? By God’s grace, by being a true worshipper. The more we learn about true worship, the more we are like magnets to God’s presence. The more we walk in true worship, the more effortless we carry God’s presence. The more we offer true worship, the more we are God’s sought-after list, so to speak. Then everywhere we go, God goes with us – profound!
Prayer [song]: I’ve come to worship. I’ve come to glorify Your Name. For You are holy, righteous, and worthy is Your Name. I come by the blood and with thanksgiving into this holy place. I bow my knees and lift my hands before Your holy throne… Amen!
